Magician and Tyrant

Revisited an old Yogaglo class last night.  The theme was Finding Unconditional Energy.   All of us battle an inner magician and an inner tyrant.  The tyrant seeks to control our external experience.  The magician works to manage our inner experience.  The tyrant wastes energy.   Who and what are we trying to control and change?  How much more energy might we have if we let go of that need?

The first time I took that class was in 2012.  What have I learned, what am I still learning?  Where was I then, where am I today.  It was a fun exercise.  (proud moment: I'm better at this than I was 6 years ago; thank you my teachers.  thank you my life.  thank you my willingness to learn the hard lessons).

Speaking of recycling old lessons...   Here's a blog post in January, 2014.   Same theme.  Always trying to improve the same areas of weakness.

Busy

A current practice: filling the various pockets of my time (categorized as work time, alone time, J time) with activities that energize me or move me closer to my goals.  Eliminating things that keep me 'busy'.  Like everything else, a practice.

To me, 'busy' implies that the person is out of control of their life - Derek Sivers

$5 flowers

These flowers sit on my table - bright, clean, alive.   They elevate everything just a bit and make our home feel just a bit more special.   Fresh flowers - one of my favorite ways to spend a few dollars.

In Life: Pema Chodron

I had a change management situation earlier in my career.  I was younger, significantly less experienced and not particularly proud of the way I handled it.  I didn't maximize the situation for the potential that it offered me, instead I let my fear and resistance to change overtake the process.  Interestingly, I find myself here again.  Hello, old friend.  However, this time I will approach it differently.  I am a student of life and although lessons sometimes feel too frequent, I am learning so much.  I truly can look at problems I have encountered as gifts which got me to exactly where I stand today.

In life we think the that the point is to pass the test or overcome the problem. The real truth is that things don’t really get solved. They come together for a time, then they fall back apart. Then they come together and fall apart again. It’s just like that.

Personal discovery and growth come from letting there be room for all this to happen: room for grief, for relief, for misery, for joy.

Suffering comes from wishing things were different. Misery is self-inflicted, when we are expecting the “idea” to overcome the “actual,” or needing things (or people, or places) to be different for us so we can then be happy.

Let the hard things in life break you. Let them effect you. Let them change you. Let those hard moments inform you. Let this pain be your teacher. The experiences of your life are trying to tell you something about yourself. Don’t cop out on that. Don’t run away and hid under your covers. Lean into it.

What is the lesson in the wind? What is the storm trying to tell you? What will you learn if you face it with courage? With full honesty and – lean into it. Pema Chodron

or more succinctly:

Newport Recap

The second half of my vacation week was spent with J and friends in Newport, RI.  I've been trying to rotate my vacations in some different parts of New England so we can see more...

Newport was a lot of fun!  We had a hotel room right at the marina and though tight, it was just enough and I have no doubt that the kids felt it was a very special few days.  We went to the beach, visited the aquarium, the indoor pool saved the rainy day, enjoyed the endless entertainment of the outdoor hammocks, and enjoyed breakfasts, lunches and dinners al fresco.   It was a lovely few days!

Vacation recap

Struggling to find the words to write about one of the most unforgettable experiences of my life...    I returned from a 5 day solo trip to REO Rafting in British Columbia.   Below are some pictures and a few borrowed words spoken in an evening yoga class.  Memories I will cherish forever ~

Scott Stabile
Just show up, as you are. You don’t have to look or feel great. You don’t have to be prepared for each challenge or know all the hows of every situation. You don’t have to be fearless, or have all the answers, or be 100% ready. Nobody is any of these things. Nobody ever was. It’s not about being perfect at all. You just have to show up, as you are, despite all the objections and insecurities of your mind, despite each and every fear that threatens to hold you back, despite the limitations and criticisms other will place on you. The hell with it all. This is your life, your journey, your adventure, and all it’s asking of you is to show for it, as you are. That’s enough. That’s more than enough. That’s everything.
